WHY WERE THE BRITISH EAGER TO TRADE IN INDIA?

The main reasons are as following:-

India was a source of several products that were much sought after by wealthy people in Europe.
Trade in species from southern India, cotton goods and yarn from Gujrat, yarn and sugar from Madras[Chennai], and silks and potassium from Bengal made profits for the East India company. They also became skilled in trading with the Indians.

WHAT EFFECT DID THE BRITISH HAVE ON THE PEOPLES OF INDIA?

In the beginning the Mughals had no problem dealing with the British. There was opportunity of good profit for them. Even later as British  many local rulers were able to make profit out of it. No one had the slightest idea including the British that subcontinent would become a major part of great British Empire.
