HAJI SHARIATULLAH AND THE FARAIZI MOVEMENT

Haji Shariat Ullah

  • born 1781 in Faridpur,Bengal
  • lived in Arabia 1799-1818
  • led the Faraizi Movement in East Bengal 1818-40
  • died 1840
THE FARAZI MOVEMENT

Looking at the poor living conditions of Muslims in East Bengal. He urged the Muslims to leave the traditions of Hindus and Sikhs and strictly follow the commandments of their religion known as faraiz or duties. It was a peaceful movement. The Muslims who followed his teachings became known as Fairaizis.

WHY WERE THE BRITISH ALARMED BY FARAIZ MOVEMENT?

The movements growth was quite rapid. Hindu landowners as well as the British were alarmed by it.The movement was stirring opposition against them and was providing light to the darkened hearts of the Muslims.

WHO WAS TITU MIR?

He was a disciple of Syed Ahmed he too was a man of action.His real name was Mir Mithar Ali.Once when Karishna Deva Rai (a Hindu lord) enraged Muslims when he imposed on them a tax on beards. Titu Mir asked the Muslims to take strong action against them. He was killed in a battle in 1831.
